Over the course of this year, you may have heard about the strange case of Huguette Clark.
Huguette Clark, who passed away in May 2011, was a reclusive multimillionaire that had not been seen in her main New York residence, or other properties in California and Connecticut, in over 20 years. Through some investigations conducted by MSNBC.com it was discovered that she had been living in a New York hospital for most of that time while her Accountant and Attorney have been managing her financial affairs.
However, those same investigations uncovered that many of her rare and valuable personal items had been sold by the pair as well as having received substantial cash gifts totally over $1 million dollars. They had even banned her family from having any communications with her. Given this information, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office opened an investigation and the family of Ms. Clark filed for guardianship.
This situation of an elderly wealthy woman of ill-health is one that can be easily opened to fraud, undue influence, and even elder abuse. If this situation is at all similar to one that you may be experiencing then obtaining a guardianship of your loved one is an option that may be available to you. If you live in the California area then you should consult with an experienced
Los Angeles Probate Attorney.
